firm与firmly:前者主要用作形容词,用作副词时其使用方法十分有限,一般只与 stand, hold等少数动词连用;而后者作为firm的副词形式,其使用方法十分广泛:If we stand firm, I firmly believe we shall succeed. 只须大家立场坚定,我坚信大家会成功的。

first与at first:前者意为“先…”,用来讲明顺序,暗示接下去还有其他动作或事件要发生;后者意为“起初”、“开始”,强调前后对照,暗示接下去的动作与前面的动词有所不同甚至相反:Think first, then act. 先想了解再做。/ At first I didn’t like her, but now I do. 起初我不喜欢她,但我目前喜欢了。

fit与suit:前者指尺寸、大小、形状等方面的合适,后者指款式或花色等方面的合适:This dress doesn’t fit me. Have you got a larger size? 这件连衣裙不合我的身,你有大一点尺寸的吗? / This dress doesn’t suit me. Have you got another style? 这件连衣裙不合适我穿,你还有其他的式样吗?

folk表示“大家”与people, police一样,是一个永远表示复数意义的名词,但有所不一样的是,folk可后加词尾-s:Some folk are never satisfied. 有的人永远不满足。

fond[fCnd] adj.喜欢的,喜好的:He is fond of dogs. 他喜欢狗。

表示“喜欢做某事”,可用be fond of doing sth,但不可以用be fond to do sth:She is fond of collecting stamps. 她喜欢集邮。

food[fu:d] n. [U,C]食物,食品:Milk is the natural food for young babies. 乳是婴儿的天然食品。

一般为不可数名词,但若表示某种特殊类型的食物,则可用作可数名词:breakfast foods 早餐食物 / frozen foods 冰冻食物

fool[fU:l] n.[C,U]傻,白痴:Don’t act the fool. 别发傻了。v.愚弄,欺骗:He fooled me into giving him money. 他欺骗我,要我给他钱。

在be fool enough to do sth 结构中,fool具备形容词的性质,其前不需要冠词:He was fool enough to believe her. 他真笨,居然去相信她的话。

foolish[5fu:liF] adj.愚蠢的,傻的:It was foolish of her to say such a thing.=She was foolish to say such a thing. 她说那样的话,真是太蠢了。

foolish, stupid, silly:foolish指无头脑,缺少知识或判断力,相当汉语的“愚蠢”; stupid指智商、理解力或学习力非常差,相当汉语的“笨”;silly指头脑简单,傻头傻脑或让人发笑,等于汉语的“傻”:She is a silly woman, but not a stupid one. 她是个头脑简单的女性,但不可以算笨。

foot[fut] n. 1.[C]足,脚 2.[C]英尺:The building is 40 feet [foot] high. 这栋大厦四十英尺高。■1. at the foot of 在…的底部:They camped at the foot of the mountain. 他们在山脚下露营。2. on foot 步行:Will you go there by bus or on foot? 你们是坐车去还是步行去?

表示“脚”时,其复数为feet;表示“英尺”时,其复数是feet或foot。
